Another person has been arrested by police investigating the murder of leading republican Kevin McGuigan.

The 41-year-old is the 12th person to have been arrested in connection with the murder.

Detective Chief Inspector John McVea said: "The suspect has been taken to the Serious Crime Suite at Antrim Police Station for questioning."

Father-of-nine Kevin McGuigan, 53, was gunned down at point blank range in front of his wife Dolores by two masked men outside the couple's home in the republican Short Strand area last month.

It is widely believed that the hit on McGuigan was in retaliation for the murder of Gerard 'Jock' Davison in the Markets area of east Belfast in May.

Both killings have led to political stalemate in Northern Ireland with the Ulster Unionist Party leaving the Stormont executive and Chief Constable of the PSNI, George Hamilton, saying that he believes members of the Provisional IRA were behind McGuigan's murder.
