Body recovered from the sea off Clare coast

A body recovered from the sea off the Clare coast by the Irish Coast Guard this afternoon has been transferred to University Hospital Limerick (UHL) where a full post mortem examination will take place.

The emergency services were notified after the body was spotted in the sea off the north Clare coast early this morning.

Searches have been ongoing in the area for David McMahon a schoolteacher in Ennis who has been missing for some time.

The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard was immediately launched and managed to locate the remains offshore.

It is unclear the body is that of a man or woman as initial reports indicate that it was in the water for some considerable period of time.

Gardaí are now cross-referencing the discovery with all existing missing person reports and will liaise with the Office of the State Pathologist in a bid to identify the individual.
