Mum of 12-year-old pregnant Irish schoolgirl says daughter has support

The mum of 12-year-old, pregnant Irish schoolgirl has broken her silence to say that her daughter is being “loved and cared for”.

The girls’ mum, who can’t be named to protect her daughter’s identity, told The Irish Daily Star that her little girl is receiving vital support from her close knit family.

Last night the girl's mother said that she had been inundated with support for her little girl, adding:

“She is being loved and cared for and she has all the support she needs, thanks.”

In connection with the underage pregnancy a PSNI spokesperson said that a 19-year-old male was arrested in west Belfast after they were informed that the young girl was pregnant.

"Police arrested a 19 year old man in the West Belfast area on Thursday 1st October in relation to a sexual offence."

If it is found that the man, who has since been bailed, had sex with the girl, he can be charged with rape, which can carry a life sentence upon conviction..

It is not clear how far the Belfast schoolgirl is into her pregnancy, but it is understood she will give birth early next year.

The young girl faces the prospect of being Ireland’s youngest ever mum
