Mum and teen son killed in tragic road collision
A mother and her son were killed when the car in which they were traveling in struck a tree on Sunday night.
The woman, in her 30s, and her 14-year-old son were both pronounced dead at the scene of the accident which occurred at Ballaghlea, Ballygar, Co. Galway at around 9.45 pm yesterday.
Gardai said no other vehicle was involved in the collision, and they were the only occupants of the car.
Their bodies were taken to University Hospital Galway for a post mortem examination.
The deaths bring to three the number of fatalities on Ireland's roads this weekend.
A woman in her 50s died following a road accident in Co Sligo on Sunday afternoon.
The woman, who was a passenger on a motorcycle, was seriously injured when it collided with a car on the N16 (Sligo to Manorhamilton road) near Drumkinsellagh, Co Sligo.
She was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
Her body was removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Sligo.
The driver of the motor cycle, a male in his 50s, was also taken to hospital.
Gardai say his condition is understood to be serious. The occupants of the car were uninjured.
A garda spokesperson said: “Garda forensic collision investigators are at the scene. The road is closed to traffic and local diversions are in place. The local coroner has been notified.”
