A number of people have been injured following a serious road accident in Limerick involving five vehicles.

Emergency services are at the scene of the pile-up which occurred shortly before 3pm today

A Lexus car, a truck, a van and two other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the accident. 

It is understood there are multiple casualties but the number of people injured is unknown. 

Emergency services are at the scene, including three units of the Limerick Fire and Rescue Service and one unit from Cappamore, paramedics and Gardaí.

A number of people have been taken to University Hospital Limerick. Their injuries are said to be non-life threatening.

The road has been closed until further notice. 

The AA said: "The southbound bore of the Limerick Tunnel is closed while emergency services deal with a crash. Diversions are in place. As a result, it's heavy on the Ennis Rd from Coonagh to Sarsfield Bridge.

"It's busy also inbound on Condell Rd and over Shannon Bridge as a result."
