Motorist dies after car leaves road and enters river

A 35-year-old man died this morning after his car left the road and entered the Dalgan River, near Claremorris, Co Mayo.

Gardai in Claremorris are appealing for witnesses to a single vehicle fatal traffic accident.

At approximately 8am this morning, a 35-year-old male died when his car left the road on the R327 near Cloonfad and entered the Dalgan River.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has since been removed to Mayo University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

A technical examination of the scene has been carried out by garda forensic collision investigators and the local coroner has been notified.

The road remains closed to traffic and local diversions are in place.
