Met Eireann are forecasting dense fog across much of the country today, with commuters warned to take care.

The Status Orange warning, the second highest that can be issued by the forecasters, predicts dense fog for Connacht, Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford.

The alert, issued last night, runs until midnight tonight.

Fog is a major danger for commuters and AA Ireland have warned motorists to take extra care today.

Their advice is to slow down, drive with extra care and to use fog lights when required.

A band of heavy rain is also expected to spread across the country, from the south west, during the day, with temperatures just making it into double figures.

Tomorrow is also expected to be cloudy and misty but it is expected to burn off and brighten up ahead of a weekend of changeable weather.
