Authorities at the Mater Hospital in Dublin are asking members of the public to keep away from the hospital due to an outbreak of Norovirus, or the ‘winter vomiting bug’.

The bug causes vomiting and diarrhoea and can be particularly harmful to elderly people.

They are asking that people avoid visiting the hospital unless it is absolutely necessary, and say staff are working flat-out to control the outbreak.

They are warning anyone who visits to wash and disinfect their hands frequently.
