Man who died after falling through window was ‘obsessed with broken glass’

34-year-old Michael Rice, who died after falling through a window, was a petty criminal who was ‘obsessed with the sound of broken glass’.

Rice, who bled to death after severing an artery in his neck in the early hours of Monday morning, had been previously charged and jailed for breaking car mirrors in 2010.

During his trial Inspector Tony O’Sullivan told Fermoy District Court that Rice drank 14 pints of beer and numerous vodkas, before proceeding to break the glass in five mirrors.

He was jailed for a month over the incident.

Insp O’Sullivan told the court that Rice “likes the sounds of broken glass and that is his problem.”

“He goes out and once he has had alcohol he like to hear the sound of glass breaking,” the garda said.

Reports indicate that Rice fell at a house in Ballydangan in Co Cork in the early hours of Monday.

His friends tried to stop the bleeding but he suffered a fatal heart attack before the ambulance arrived.

His body was removed to Cork university Hospital.
