Man tragically dies after work place accident

A man has died after being critically injured in a work place accident in Cork.

The incident occurred shortly after 11am at Fountainstown outside Crosshaven in south Cork.

It is understood that the accident occurred near a popular mobile home park where works were being undertaken.

The precise circumstances of the accident are unclear but it is believed the man was working on or near a deep trench.

Locals raced to his aid after the accident and both gardai and paramedics were on the scene within minutes.

They then prepared to transfer the man to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

However, despite desperate efforts to stabilise the man's condition, he was pronounced dead a short time later.

He is aged in his 50s.

The man's name will not be released until all relatives are notified.

As is routine, the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) were notified of the tragedy.

A HSA review will now be carried out.

A file will also be prepared for the Cork coroner's office.

A garda source said the incident is being treated as a tragic accident.

Fountainstown is a busy seaside resort, particularly popular with Cork city residents given its proximity.
