A man is being treated in hospital for injuries which are being described as serious after he was stabbed outside a supermarket in Newcastle, County Down.

The incident happened shortly after 7.30 last night on the Castlewellan Road in the seaside town.

It is understood the victim, who was stabbed five times, is in his 40s.

One man has bee arrested in connection with the incident.

SDLP MP for South Down, Margaret Ritchie, said: “This was a brutal and terrifying attack and I absolutely condemn it.

“I understand the man who was stabbed is being treated at the Royal Victoria Hospital and I hope he has a swift recovery.

“This happened on a busy road near a supermarket on the Castlewellan Road and people will have information which will be useful to the investigation team.

“I urge anyone who saw what happened to contact the police. Community co-operation is the essence of good policing.”
