A man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred earlier this evening.

The gun attack occurred in Athy, County Kildare earlier today.

Shortly after 5pm, a man was shot a number of times in the Green Hills estate in the town. The victim is a 22-year-old man, Gardai said.

Gardai said they have arrested a man in his early 40s in connection with the murder.

He is currently detained at Kildare Garda Station under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007.

Emergency services were called and he was rushed to Naas General hospital. His condition was described as serious.

However, he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Gardai said the scene has been preserved and an investigation has been launched. No arrests have yet been confirmed.

The Offices of the State Pathologist have been notified and a post-mortem is to be arranged.
