Man in his 70s dies following house fire in Galway
A man in his 70s died in a fire at his home in Recess, Connemara, Co Galway, today.
The fire broke out at about 1.30pm today and was noticed by a neighbour.
Locals attempted to gain access to the house in a bid to rescue the elderly man but were beaten back by flames.
Fire Brigade units from from Clifden and Galway rushed to the scene but were unable to save the man.
It is understood that he had lived alone at the house.
The man’s remains were brought to University College Hospital in Galway where a post mortem examination will be carried out.
Gardaí in Clifden are investigating the incident.
