A man has been airlifted to hospital in critical condition following an explosion in Cork.

The man, who is in his 30s, suffered serious injuries after the explosion which occurred at Millennium Court Industrial Estate in Youghal, Co Cork.

He was rushed by helicopter to Cork University Hospital after an oil tank exploded at a steel fabricators in the coastal town of Youghal.

Gardai say they responded to a call at the factory at approximately 9.30am. 

It is understood the man was injured while welding an oil tank in the Millennium Court Industrial estate on the outskirts of the town.

He was transported by the Irish Coastguard Sikorski helicopter Rescue 117 from Waterford after they received a call at about 9.50am. 

Two units from the Cork County Fire Service also responded to the incident. They were reported to have left at approximately 11am. 

The Health and Safety Authority said they have been made aware of the incident.
