A man in his 20s has had his ear partly severed in an attack outside a chipper.

The 25-year-old is due to undergo plastic surgery at St James's Hospital in Dublin following the row.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which occurred in Ardee in County Louth at around 1.50am. 

A Garda spokesperson said the row took place outside a chipper on Bridge Street. The unnamed man had his ear severed after being bit by another individual. 

He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda and then transferred to St James's Hospital for plastic surgery.

Officers said the man - who is from the area - is expected to make a formal complaint later.

They said they are preparing a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
