A man is fighting for his life this morning following a serious assault in Dublin last night.

The man, who is in his late 20s, was set upon by a gang in Dublin's main tourist hotpot, Temple Bar.

The victim was set upon in Cow's Lane at approximately 8.45pm and sustained a serious head injury in a one-punch assault.

Reports suggest the sickening attack was filmed by onlookers during a row involving a number of people.

He was rushed to nearby St James's Hospital where he is said to be in critical condition

Three men were arrested at the scene and are being questioned at Pearse Street and Irishtown garda stations.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses and say a number of people recorded the fight on their mobile phones.

They are urged to contact Pearse Street garda station on 01 6669000. Anybody who may have witnessed the incident or were in the vicinity of Cows Lane between 8.30pm and 9pm is asked to come forward.

Meanwhile, gardai have sealed off two areas at North Strand canal bank where a separate assault occurred overnight.

Details of the attack or the seriousness of any injuries are not yet clear.

It is understood, however, that a passing ambulance happened upon the man at approximately 5am and rushed him to Mater Hospital.
