A man in his 20s slipped and fell into the River Liffey last night during the adverse weather conditions caused by Storm Abigail.

Gardai from Pearse Street, the Dublin Fire Brigade and the Coastguard helicopter conducted a search of the River Liffey last night.

Reports indicate that a male who was in the company of the man tried to rescue him but failed to do so and alerted the emergency services.

The search was conducted for a number of hours but was stood down.

The search will begin again this morning at Sir John Rogerson Quay.
