Gardai believe a man who walked into Charleville garda station in the early hours of last Thursday morning in a confused state may have been the victim of a car-jacking and abduction.

An investigation has been launched into the alleged incident amid speculation that the man may have been threatened with a weapon and drugged during the ordeal which lasted for up to three hours.

The man, in his early 20s, was approached by two males as he got into his silver VW Golf on the Main Street of the town at around 1am.

He told gardai the men, who are understood to be in their late teens or early 20s, pressurised him into getting into the vehicle with them before it was driven off.

At 4am the alleged victim, who claimed he had hardly any recollection of the incident, walked into Charleville garda station in what a source described as a "distressed, dishevelled and disoriented" condition.

His car was found nearby and the man was missing items including a mobile phone and a small sum of cash.

CCTV footage is being examined as part of the investigation.

Officers are attempting to establish where the car was during the three-hour gap between the time of the alleged abduction and when the man walked into the garda station.

A number of lines of enquiry are being followed in relation to the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Charleville garda station on 063 - 81222.
