A man has died after a narrow boat sank while passing through a canal lock.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was called to a stretch of waterway in Worcestershire at about 11.20am on Monday.

The incident happened on a lock along the Droitwich Junction Canal, off the main Worcester and Birmingham Canal.

Firefighters managed to get the man off the stricken boat but he could not be saved.

An elderly woman who was able to get herself off the boat was uninjured.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: "The lock was drained and firefighters went on board the narrow boat.

"They brought the man out and advanced life support was carried out by ambulance staff, but sadly it was not possible to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

"An elderly woman who had managed to get off the narrow boat was assessed by ambulance staff but was found to be uninjured and was left with police officers."
