A man strangled and cut up his wife before using her head encased in concrete to weigh himself down and kill himself in an Austrian lake.

AP are reporting that the couple were in their 70s and from Germany.

The woman's head was found inside a block of concrete that was in a bag tied to the man's arm. His toher arm was also weighed down.

The grim discovery was made in Lake Traunsee on Monday, a day after two suitcases of the woman's remains were found floating on the surface.

Police suspect it was a murder-suicide with no third party involved.

It is thought the woman died on a date between Christmas Day and New Year's Day, with the man drowning some time afterwards.
