A man is fighting for his life in hospital following a serious assault in Limerick.

Gardai are investigating the attack which occurred in the early hours of this morning. 

A man was critically injured in a serious assault at the Square in Newcastle West, Gardai said, at approximately 2.15am. 

The man, who is aged in his 30s, suffered serious head injuries when he was reportedly knocked to the ground and kicked in the head by another man. 

Emergency services were called and the man was rushed to Cork University Hospital for head trauma treatment. The man has since been transferred to University Hospital Limerick (UHL).

The area where the assault was carried out has been cordoned off to allow investigators conduct a forensic examination.

No arrests have been made.
