Man assaulted in Navan has died of his injuries

Christopher Nevin, the man viciously attacked in Navan yesterday, has died Gardai have confirmed.

The incident took place yesterday afternoon in the Tailteann Crescent area of Navan.

Christopher Nevin was seriously injured in an altercation with a number of other males at approximately 2.15pm. 

The males got into a silver car which drove off in the direction of the town centre.

The scene has been preserved at Tailteann Rd. Navan.

Reports suggest that the 27-year-old was struck a number of times with a hatchet and that he also suffered stab wounds in the brutal assault.

One witness told the Star that "two guys just approached him and just set about him. It was a vicious beating".

Nevin was taken immediately to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital but he died of his injuries this afternoon, garadi confirmed. 

A post mortem will take place at the mortuary at the hospital in Drogheda tomorrow.

Authorities have launched a murder investigation following news of Mr Nevin's death. 

Gardai in Navan are appealing for witnesses, anyone who was on the Tailtean Rd or in the vicinity of Winetown between 1.50pm and 2.30pm, or anyone who may have any information, to contact them on 046 9079930, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

Boxer John Joe Nevin paid tribute to Christopher on his Facebook page following news of his death. 

He wrote: "Rip Christopher Nevin may u get a good bed in heaven!"
