A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a woman 28 years ago.

Gardai detained the man, who is in his 50s, this evening in connection with the murder of Ann Nancy Smyth. 

The man is due to appear at a special sitting of Kilkenny District Court charged in relation to the murder of Ms Smyth on 11 September, 1987, at Wolfe Tone Street, Kilkenny. 

Gardia based at Kilkenny arrested the 52-year-old man in the city and brought him to Kilkenny Garda station where he was subsequently charged with murder.   

Ms Smith, a 79-year-old widow who had been living alone, was found deceased at her home at 42A Wolfe Tone Street, Kilkenny on the aforementioned date.  

The man is currently detained at Kilkenny Garda station will appear at a special sitting of Kilkenny District court at courthouse at 9.30am tomorrow morning. 

Gardai reopened the murder case in 2012 after a crimecall appeal was aired on RTE. 

The elderly lady's partly burned body was discovered along with that of her dog's.

She had been strangled before an attempt was made to torch her sofa in a bid to make the murder look like an accident.
