Man arrested after Ballycastle murder


A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after after a man's body was found on Thursday evening at an address in Ballycastle, County Antrim.

The 48-year-old man, named locally as Anthony McErlain, was found at around 8.30pm last night at a flat in Broombeg View.

Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Talbot said: "Our investigation is at a very early stage and we're keen to hear from anyone with information about this heinous crime."

Mervyn Storey, DUP MLA, said: "Ballycastle is a close-knit community and this has shocked people in the area.

“The full details have yet to be established but it would appear that it was a particularly brutal murder.

“Whilst the police have made an arrest it's vital that anyone with information assists the investigation so the full facts can be established and whoever is responsible brought to justice."

Local Sinn Fein councillor, Cara McShane, said: "This was a brutal murder. It took place in a residential area of the town and at a time of the evening when people would still have been going about their daily business.

"The community here is shocked as well as angry and saddened at this tragic incident.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family and to everyone who has been impacted."
