A 21-year-old man has lost his life following a serious road collision which occurred late last night.

Two other young males were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Gardai said.

The 21-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene after the vehicle he was travelling in collided with a bollard.

The collision occurred at approximately 11.30pm at Carnashannagh, Burnfoot, in Donegal, on the Buncrana to Burnfoot Road.

It is believed the driver of the car, an 18-year-old man, lost control of the vehicle before it crashed into the bollard. The driver and another 21-year-old man who was a passenger were both injured.

Emergency services were called and the pair were rushed to Letterkenny General hospital for treatment.

The road is closed until at least lunchtime in order to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and diversions are in place.

Gardai wish to appeal for witnesses to contact Buncrana Garda Station on 074 9320540, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

Elsewhere, three people were killed in a serious road collision in Laois in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Gardai have launched an investigation into the fatal crash which claimed the lives of Martin Brophy (20), Orla Curry (20) and Angela Kelly (35).
