A major search operation is underway for a tourist couple who failed to return to their car at a popular tourist spot at the weekend.

A car believed to have been hired by a Japanese couple in their 60s was located at Byrnes Cove in Kilkee yesterday.

It's believed the vehicle has been at the popular spot since being parked there on Saturday.

Members of the Kilkee unit of the Irish Coast Guard have been carrying out land searches since yesterday and have been out since first light this morning.

The Shannon-based Irish Coast Guard helicopter has also been sweeping the area.

A spokesperson for Kilkee Coast Guard told RTÉ: "We’re in the middle of a major operation here at the moment, since first light we’ve been here again."
