A GANG armed with machetes and iron bars attacked a family home in Waterford city this afternoon.

The gang of around 10 targeted the home on Anne Street in the city centre around 2pm.

They used machetes to try and smash their way through the front door of the home.

It is understood one of the occupants of the home put his shoulder to the door to try and prevent the gang smashing their way in.

There were 14 people in the house at the time including children. The family have been living in the area for over 30 years.

The gang also smashed up a car and camper van parked outside the house.

While considerable damage was caused to property no-one was injured in the attack.

It is unclear what the motive was behind the attack.

Gardai sealed off Anne Street and carried out technical examinations this afternoon.
