A lucky punter is celebrating an unforgettable Christmas after winning a €4.5 million jackpot.

The winning ticket, it was revealed, for the Christmas Eve Lotto jackpot was sold in Cavan.

The punter scooped a whopping €4,577,663 in the jackpot after reportedly buying a €5 quick-pick in the small town of Bailieboro. 

A Super-Valu store in the town took to social media to announce they had sold the winning ticket.

"What a way to End Christmas Eve. Everyone check your lotto tickets because we have just sold the winning ticket of tonight's Lotto jackpot of 4.5million on a €5 quickpick.

"Massive congratulations to the winner", they wrote. 

The winning numbers were 8, 10, 11, 16, 40, 42, and bonus 38.

The National Lottery is advising all players to check their tickets. The headquarters in Dublin will reopen at 9am on Thursday; punters can collect their winnings then. 

They are asking the winner to contact the National Lottery Prize Claims Team on (01) 836 4444.
