A couple who scooped £50,000 (€67,000) in a Channel Islands lottery last Christmas blew the lot in eight months and they are now asking for their benefits to be restored.

The Telegraph report that unemployed couple Jamie and Abbie Hart blew the windfall on clothes, furniture, holidays and a TV as they felt they 'deserved to buy nice stuff'.

Now they admit they were 'silly' and they want to have income support and housing benefit restored before they are evicted from their home in Guernsey.

After the win they moved from a bedsit paid for by the housing benefit and moved into a flat but when the money ran out they used some they had set aside for their children to secure a house.

However, even after selling the bulk of the furniture they bought to furnish their flat they are now broke again and face eviction.

Social Security are refusing to put the couple back on benefits as Abbie alleges they think the couple have stashed half the winnings.

The couple deny this and claim they just want some help until they can get back on their feet and into work.
