A man has died following a horrific attack in the capital during which he was viciously assaulted before being run over by a car.

The victim, named locally as Stephen Lynch (below) who was aged in his early 30s, was set upon shortly after 7pm last night in Brookview Close, Tallaght.

He was attacked by a number of men, who drove over him with a car when he tried to flee the area.

Last night, the community was reeling as gardaí set up a forensic tent and began their investigations.

One neighbour - a lady in her 60s - expressed her shock.

"I heard roaring and people running but I didn't hear the accident - it is terrible especially to have happened at Easter. God help his family, it is frightening. It is a shock to everyone," she said.

There was heavy garda presence at the scene last night.

A garda spokesman said: "Gardaí at Tallaght are investigating an incident which occurred at Brookview Close, Tallaght, at approximately 7pm this evening.

"A man in his 30s was struck by a car at this location and was pronounced dead a short time later.

"The driver of the car left the scene on foot.

"The road is currently closed pending a Garda forensic collision examination. The coroner has been notified," the spokesman added.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
