The Heath Minister witnessed an armed robbery as he canvassed on Carpenterstown Road in Castleknock tonight.

A sword wielding man and another armed with a gun had just robbed a Spar store and were running from the scene when Leo Varadkar arrived, just after 7pm tonight.

The Minister was unharmed in the incident.

He was “relieved” no-one was hurt during the robbery in his local Spar, which he shops in “all the time” even though locals were "shocked" following the incident.

“A guy ran by me but it was all over by the time I arrived. Unfortunately, burglaries affect have every area of the country in recent year and I’m just glad no-one was hurt or harmed,” Mr Varadkar told Independent.ie.

Reports indicate that Green Party councillor Roderick O'Gorman and Fianna Fail's Jack Chambers were also on the scene.

The robbery happened at 7pm, Tuesday night on Carpenterstown Road in Castleknock.

Detectives were at the store earlier interviewing witnesses who were in the area at the time.
