A large-scale rescue mission is continuing after a person was spotted in the River Liffey in Dublin.

A coast guard helicopter was spotted hovering above the river for a period of time this morning.

Gardai and the Fire Brigade are assisting the Coast Guard with the operation.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed the operation was focused around the Talbot Memorial Bridge, close to the Custom House.

An individual believed to be a male was reported to have entered the water near the CHQ building in the IFSC at approximately 10.12am.

The helicopter has since left the area, but two RNLI lifeboats continue to comb the area.

A dive team has joined the search for the man.
