Knife attack victim fighting for his life in hospital

A 54-year-old man who was stabbed four times as he stood on his doorstep yesterday morning is fighting for his life in hospital.

Garda have arrested a man in his 20s in connection with the attack.

It is understood that the victim and suspect know each other.

The incident occurred at Tom Clarke Place in the Parkside area of Ballina, Co Mayo.

The victim underwent emergency surgery at Mayo General Hospital where he remains critical in the intensive care unit.

The victim has no involvement in crime and has never been in trouble with the law.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses, and want anyone who may have been in the vicinity of Tom Clarke Place in the early hours of yesterday morning to contact Ballina Garda Station on 096 20560.

The suspect is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Ballina Garda Station.
