Kitten left for dead on side of road after being skinned
A brave little kitten is making a remarkable recovery after it was cruelly skinned and left for dead on a roadside.
The kitten, which has had to have its tail amputated, was discovered close to the foot of Croagh Patrick as hundreds of pilgrims gathered to climb the holy mountain on Reek Sunday last week, writes Darragh McDonagh on independent.ie.
Its tail had been completely skinned from the base, leaving just raw flesh exposed, which had become infected and necrotic.
The excruciating injury was so localised and precise, it is believed that it can only have been inflicted deliberately with the use of a blade.
The tiny kitten, which is about five or six weeks old, was drenched and freezing when it was found by Caroline Hopkins, who brought it to her sister, Jacqueline – a veterinary nurse and owner of The LaundroMutt dog grooming service in nearby Castlebar.
“I’ve never seen a de-gloving injury like that before, where the skin is removed right from the base of the tail. It was horrendous and had already become necrotic, leaving him with just days to live,” said Jacqueline.
The little cat, who has been named Patrick, was brought to a vet and underwent surgery during the week to amputate his tail. The operation revealed that the infection had already spread into the bone.
Patrick, now completely tailless, is recovering in the care of the dog groomer who says he is now doing well.
“He may have lost his tail, but he still has his big heart,” said Jacqueline. “He’s a little trooper, who still purrs and plays despite all he’s been through.
“We have another rescue kitten at the moment and he’s made really good friends with him, they’ve been great for one another. He’s also completely fearless meeting the dogs that come in to be groomed.
“Patrick’s been subjected to such cruelty, yet he’s so happy and friendly. You can’t help but smile to look at him. Hopefully his tale will have a happy ending,” added Jacqueline.
