Kenny Egan blasts Paddy Barnes over Daniel Kinahan comments
Paddy Barnes' former Olympic team-mate Kenny Egan has called his comments about Daniel Kinahan 'naive/ignorant'.
The Olympic silver medallist from 2008 is now a Fine Gael councillor in Clondalkin and in today's Irish Sun he slammed Barnes for saying he would be happy to have mob boss Daniel Kinahan in his corner in a weekend interview.
"I think he was a bit naive/ignorant of him to say that," Egan tells the paper.
Barnes turned professional and signed up with MGM Marbella last week, a gym that was recently raided by Spanish police in a crackdown on Kinahan mob.
The Marbella-based gym was founded by the former boxing champion Matthew Macklin, who is not involved in criminality.
Mobster Kinahan, a son of the international drug trafficker Christy Kinahan, plays a senior role in running the MGM gym.
Egan goes on to say that perhaps the name Kinahan doesn't mean as much to Barnes as he does not hail from Dublin.
"Paddy is very vocal and he's very opinionated but he is sectioned off up there in Belfast and probably doesn't know what's going on. I know who Daniel Kinahan is, you know who Daniel Kinahan is but Paddy mightn't really know."
Over the weekend Barnes (29) said that he didn't know anything about the Kinahans - despite Daniel Kinahan being pictured in the gym.
"I've read people saying that. But where's the facts and the proof of it?" said Barnes. "I don't know anything about the Kinahans, I only know Matthew Macklin. But what has Daniel Kinahan been convicted of?"
Barnes, who is expected to debut in Belfast before the end of the year, claimed that it would not bother him if Daniel Kinahan was in his corner come fight night.
"If he wants to sit in my corner, he can sit in my corner," he said.
The champion boxer also questioned why Daniel Kinahan has been portrayed as somebody involved in crime. He said: "So people need to be careful what they are saying if they are slandering people's names.
"People are saying he's a criminal, but he's been convicted of nothing. Strange, isn't it? He's roaming the world free with no convictions and warrants for his arrest."
