A pair of kayakers have been rescued after they got into difficulty near the Cliffs of Moher.

The incident occurred after the men left Doolin in Co Clare just before midday today.

They plotted a course south along the coast to the cliffs but, after going on-shore for a break, found that the tide had receded – leaving them stranded.

After carrying the kayaks across the difficult terrain on the shore they were completely physically exhausted and found they couldn’t row.

At around 5pm the Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard responded when the alarm was raised and located the men.

The rescue boat took them aboard and towed their kayaks behind.
