Journalist George Byrne laid to rest

In life his passion was music, and legendary journalist George Byrne was given a rock ‘n’ roll send off when his funeral took place today in Dublin.

Paul McLoone of The Undertones sang one of his favourite songs, Teenage Kicks, during the service.

And George’s long-time friend Tom Dunne of Something Happens and Today FM radio, performed In My Life by The Beatles, and the farewell song, the Beach Boys’ God Only Knows.

Family, friends and a host of luminaries from the worlds of media, the arts and sport packed the St Nicholas of Myra Church on Francis Street for Herald movie critic George’s final moment in the spotlight.

Well known faces among the mourners included Christy Dignam and Billy McGuinness of Aslan, Simon Carmody, Dave Fanning, Ray D’Arcy, Brian Kerr, author John Connolly, Pete Holliday, Paul Cleary, Smiley Bolger, Aidan Walsh, Thomas Walsh of Pugwash and Steve Averill.
