Irish woman dies in South African boating tragedy
An Irish woman has died after the yacht she was sailing capsized and broke up near South Africa’s Western Cape.
Rescuers were called to the scene shortly after 4.30am local time following reports of a vessel capsizing.
A survivor raised the alarm after swimming to shore.
A 49-year-old Irish woman and a 61-year-old Scottish man died in the incident.
Another Irish citizen on board the vessel survived.
The 66-year-old man is understood to have been living locally for a number of years.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed they are aware of "the death of an Irish citizen in the Western Cape and consular assistance is being provided."
