An Irish sailor, who has helped to save hundreds of migrants while serving aboard the LE Niamh, is recovering after his leg was broken in a brutal attack.

It is understood that the attack took place while he and the other 58 crew members were on shore at the Sicilian port of Catania after a nightmare rescue at the end of July.

The sailor was returning to the ship when he was chased and attacked by a group of men.

They launched a severe attack on the man and left him battered and with a broken leg.

He has since been flowed back to Ireland to recuperate.

It’s understood that the sailor was not in uniform at the time and it’s believed the attackers didn’t now he was a member of the Defence Forces.

“We don’t know what the motive was; it could have been anybody who was attacked, “a source said last night.

The LE Niamh is due to complete its mission to the Med by the middle of next month.
