A family in Offaly played Euromillions for the first time and pocketed €500,000 as a result.

In what must surely be the greatest ever example of beginner's luck, one Offaly family is half a million richer after a string of remarkable pieces of luck.

The family, who wish to remain anonymous, have been playing the Lotto for the last seven years but they decided that they'd give the Euromillions a spin after winning on a scratch card.

The group, made up of a man, his aunt and two cousins, won the scratch card in the regular Lotto draw. On that card they won €6, and rather than divide it up, they decided to buy a Euromillions ticket for the first time in the syndicate's history.

The €6 quick pick was purchased in the Applegreen Brosna Service Station on the Railway Road, Birr on June 19 and they picked up the Euromillions Plus prize, the Ireland only game with a guaranteed jackpot of €500,000.
