Hundreds attend anti-water charges protest outside Dail

There is a very strong garda presence at the Dail this evening as an anti-water charge protest takes place.

The demonstration is by the Communities Against Water Charges and has been called ahead of the Dail summer recess.

It comes after a garda was knocked unconscious after she was struck by a traffic cone at a protest against water charges earlier this month.

Several Dail deputies were also prevented from leaving Leinster House on that occasion with protesters charging some cars as they attempted to exit the House.

This evening the entrance to Leinster House has been cordoned off with a barrier erected at the top of Molesworth Street and around 50 gardai keeping a watching brief.

There is also a public order unit garda van further up Kildare Street with several officers wearing protective vests.

The barrier runs down Molesworth Sreeet past Buswells Hotel which demonstrators are also being prevented from entering.

A group of around 150 - 200 protesters have gathered and are chanting for an end to water charges.

The event is passing off peacefully so far.
