A homeless man sleeping inside a bin in California survived two compaction cycles after the bin was emptied into a rubbish lorry.

The 44-year-old man was sleeping inside a large rubbish bin behind a restaurant when the lorry collected it and used the compactor.

The lorry then travelled to a fast food restaurant, collected rubbish from another bin there and used the compactor again.

A police spokeswoman said the man crawled out through an opening in the roof the next time the truck stopped and that he was lucky to have survived the compaction without serious injuries.
