Gardai in Co Monaghan prevented a gang of criminals from smashing down a wall to steal an ATM last night.

At around 3am a hole was smashed into a wall containing an ATM machine in Castleblaney, after a teleporter was stolen from a local building site and used in the attempted raid.

Gardai were alerted and rushed to the scene, but their efforts were initially thwarted by barriers that the gang had placed on roads leading to the area.

When they finally arrived the gang sped away from the scene in a Ford Transit van and a dark Audi A6.

Gardai pursued the vehicles in a high-speed chase but eventually gave up when the raiders escaped across the border into Northern Ireland.

An investigation is currently taking place, but apart from extensive damage the gang left empty-handed.
