Two brothers were hailed as heroes last night after they saved their 86-year-old father from a house fire which is believed to have been started deliberately.

Patrick Brosnan and his 86-year-old father William were hospitalised following the blaze.

The incident occurred at Gort Road, Corofin, Co Clare.

The alarm was raised at 8:15am when thick black smoke and flames were spotted at the front of the semidetached home.

Patrick Brosnan was opening the nearby church at the time, while his brother Thomas was on his way to work. The brothers returned to find a blaze in the porch area and their father trapped inside.

Thomas Brosnan was left blackened by soot but was otherwise uninjured. "I just ran in and got him out, that's all really," Mr Brosnan said.

It's understood there was no fire damage inside the house, which did sustain heavy smoke damage.

Gardaí are investigating the cause of the blaze. It is understood gardaí detected evidence of what appeared to be an accelerant.
