Hero garda dives into river with local to pull man from sinking car

A member of the gardai and a local man jumped into the water to save the driver of a sinking car that had driven off a pier.

The near-tragedy occurred at the pier in Ballyvaughan, Co Clare on Sunday August 14.

Garda Sergeants John Casey and Marie Crowley were called to the scene and their fast-thinking saved the driver's life.

Sgt Casey stripped down and jumped into the water along with a local man, John McDonald.

Sgt Casey and Mr McDonald managed to rescue the man from the vehicle and bring him to the shore.

A nurse from the local health centre, Ailish Hynes, provided first aid until ambulance paramedics arrived.

The man was later transferred to University Hospital Galway for treatment.

Superintendent Martin McGonnell of Kilrush praised the two men who prevented "a tragedy".

"They put themselves at risk to save the man.

"It was a very difficult task and without the help of locals, it could have had a very different outcome," McGonnell said.

"Thankfully nobody was injured and I'd like to acknowledge the bravery of all involved.

"It's not always possible to save a life but if members of the public hadn't been there to help, it could have been a tragedy."
