Crash: The scene of the accident in Longford

Two people have miraculously survived a helicopter crash which occurred last night in Longford.

The incident occurred at about 9pm in the town of Abbeyshrule.

Two people aboard the helicopter escaped serious injury when the aircraft clipped the side of a pub and crash-landed.

Images which have emerged show the helicopter on its side with some structural damage to the Rustic Inn, seen in the background.

It is believed the helicopter was making to land when it clipped the side of the pub. There is an airfield not too far away.

The Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) confirmed it is due to carry out an investigation into the crash. Gardai said the AAIU were sending investigators to the scene late last night.

It is understood several people in the Rustic Inn received minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Local Fine Gael councillor Paul Ross said it was “a miracle no one was hurt” giving the location the crash occurred.

"Between the canal, the road and the hotel building, there is actually very little room to manoeuvre so it really is incredible no one has been reported injured."
