The Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission have formally opened an investigation into a video posted online involving a member of the force.

The video, which you can view here, was taken at an anti-NAMA protest in Wexford and shows a garda striking a protester with a retractable baton.

Now GSOC have made a brief statement on the matter.

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission has opened an investigation into events seen in a video on social media, which appears to show the policing of a protest at a property auction in Gorey, Co. Wexford.

The Commission is of the opinion that the public interest is best served by an independent investigation of this matter. This decision is taken in accordance with section 102(4) of the Garda Síochána Act 2005.
