A young boy has been praised for helping free his sister following an attempted abduction yesterday.

A man has been arrested in connection with the incident, which occurred at Cullahill in County Laois.

The young girl managed to escape after her ten-year-old brother jumped onto the back of the vehicle.

The suspect was arrested in Castlecomer in Kilkenny this afternoon on suspicion of abduction. He is currently being detained at Portlaoise Garda Station.

The man had been driving around and begging for money, but yesterday Gardaí received reports he tried to abduct a young girl. He allegedly spoke to two children before putting one of them in the back and then attempting to drive off.

Gardai recovered a stolen vehicle, pictured above, with registration number 04-KK-2649.

They tracked the suspect after appealing to the public earlier this morning for information regarding the suspect vehicle.

The suspect was described as as approximately 6’2” in height, of thin build and grey hair.

The 4 X 4 Nissan jeep was seen acting suspiciously in the area prior to the incident, Gardai said.

They thanked the public and the media for their help apprehending the man: "Gardaí wish to thank the media and the public for their assistance in this matter. No further action is required."
