Gardai investigating early morning fatal road collision in which man was killed

Gardai are investigating a single-vehicle road collision which occurred this morning.

The collision happened at Old Chapel, Bandon in County Cork at approximately 7.00am. 

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was a man in his 60s.

He was travelling on the Old Chapel/Timoleague turn off on the N71 when he crashed, Gardai said. No other vehicles were involved in the collision. 

The man, who is believed to be in his late 60s, was seriously injured and pronounced dead at the scene. 

"The road at the scene is closed to facilitate a technical examination by Garda forensic collision investigators", a spokesperson said. 

The casualty is the second death on Irish roads in the last 36 hours.

Gardaí said they have launched an investigation into the collision, which happened near McClay's Corner in the town.
