Gardai are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man whose body was discovered early this morning.

Gardai were called to a house at Barrick Hill near Wolfe Tone Street in Limerick city following reports of a disturbance in the area.

There, they made the discovery of a body at approximately 5.35am.

A man in his 50s was arrested at the scene. He is being detained at Roxboro Road Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

The house has been sealed off for a full technical and forensic examination.

It is believed the man, who is in his late 30s or early 40s, was the victim of a domestic disturbance and may have been attacked with a sharp instrument. His death is being treated as suspicious.

The office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem is expected to be carried out later today after the body is removed. The Garda Technical Bureau is expected at the scene later this afternoon.

Wolfe Tone Street has been closed to traffic, a Gardai spokesperson added.

Anybody who may have information regarding the death can contact Henry Street Garda Station on +353 61 212 400 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
